Why Write?

People over 60 years old have much to gain from making writing a part of their life routine.


1. Enhance memory, comprehension and combats depression

Just as muscles get weak from inactivity, so does the brain. When one writes, the brain searches for the words to express his/her thoughts. Those thoughts are then composed and recomposed as his or her hands form the letters of the words, encouraging cognitive recall and strengthening the hand-brain connection. Writing and mentally engaging boost flagging memory and by regularly doing so it combats depression or potential depression in older adults. 


2. Reduce mental health issues/illness

Writing allows one to vent feelings, helps clarify thoughts and increases reaction time.According to the Alzheimer’s Association, research shows that keeping brain active increases its vitality. Remembering, re-living some scenes, thoughts and emotions while writing stories appears to help retain brain cells and connections. 


3. Boost Self-Confidence

Writing about positive experiences allows one to relive those moments, which triggers boost mood and self-esteem, increases creativity and problem solving.


4. Increase socializing

When one writes the stories he/she starts to wish to share them with others as well. Going out and socializing, making new friends, enjoying reading more and writing more experiencing the achievement of getting published and seeing your work in print – all these activities have immense positive impact on quality of life of older adults.
